Thanksgiving time is around the corner! Itโs the time of year when family gathers, the kitchen smells heavenly, and we have decided that the calories donโt count while taking big bites of turkey and sweet potato pie. But letโs be real, while the holiday may fill our hearts (and stomachs), it can also put extra pounds on our waistlines. As a registered nurse, Iโm here to offer you a few healthy tips on how to get back on track after chowing down on that third helping of dressing.
1. Walk It Like I Talk It
Listen, the goal here isnโt to turn into Symone Biles overnight, but getting active is one of the best ways to bounce back from that holiday dinner. You donโt need a fancy gym or special equipment, just your own two legs and a little motivation. Head out for a brisk walk, turn on some music and dance while cleaning up, or invite family and friends over for a game of basketball or volleyball. Youโd be surprised how those sweat sessions add up.
2. Eyes Bigger than the Stomach? Hereโs How to Eat Less
Itโs a known fact that Thanksgiving tables have a gravitational pull, especially the dessert section. But hereโs a trick from the health side of things: grab a smaller plate. Research shows that we tend to eat less when using smaller plates. Fill it with your favorites, but donโt stack it like a mountain. Youโll still enjoy all of the flavors without overloading your plate.
Another tip? Try to be mindful of what youโre eating. Slow down, savor each bite, and donโt be afraid to skip a dish that you don’t particularly like. Grandma’s pea salad? Maybe not this year.
3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Sometimes we mistake thirst for hunger. That extra dinner roll you grabbed? It might be your bodyโs way of saying, “Hey, could I get some water down here?” Make it a habit to sip water throughout the day, especially before meals. Staying hydrated keeps you feeling full, and itโs great for your energy and digestion, too. Plus, it balances out the extra sodium that we consume during the holidays.
4. Remember, Balance is Key
The holidays are meant to be enjoyed, so donโt stress yourself out. The truth is, a few extra holiday treats wonโt undo all your progress if you donโt let them. Focus on maintaining a balanced mindset: enjoy your favorite foods, but also add in a few healthier choices like veggies and proteins.
So this Thanksgiving, letโs eat, laugh, and celebrate, then work it off and get back to feeling our best! Whether youโre dancing off those extra bites or hydrating like a pro, itโs all about balance.
Happy Thanksgiving, Grambling!
